We often hear about genetics and genes—but what exactly is genetics? Genetics is a field of science, concerning how characteristics of organisms—or traits— are passed down from one generation of organisms to the next. The way traits are passed down are through DNA and genes, part of an organism's "instruction set". But more on that later.
